But I did have an aha moment in 1994, when I was in college: Although my parents had given me a nice canvas tote bag for Christmas and suggested using it for grocery shopping, so far I had forgotten to bring it to the store. One day I was walking back across campus carrying two plastic bags of groceries when one of the bags ripped, sending what happened to be mostly cylindrical items rolling all over the sidewalk! I managed to retrieve everything, but I realized that my canvas bag would not have done that and also could be carried on my shoulder instead of cutting into my hands. Since then I've remembered my bags for at least 90% of grocery runs!Becca @ The Earthling's Handbookhttp://articles.earthlingshandbook.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882959808811184859.post-89384444752155845682017-04-18T06:27:44.791-05:002017-04-18T06:27:44.791-05:00Girl Scouts is such a great organization. And yes, kids pick up on so much they can certainly keep you on your toes!SkipTheBaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02426786864856395559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882959808811184859.post-36804991392797457332017-04-17T15:43:40.329-05:002017-04-17T15:43:40.329-05:00I'm like daisy gurl, the 70's ecology clas...I'm like daisy gurl, the 70's ecology class. But it really hit home when I became a Girl Scout Leader for my 6 yr old daughter 27 yrs ago. When you're working with kids you have to walk the talk. They are watching at all times. Now I just try my hardest to not make any extra trash, and know that I'm still being a good example for my kids and maybe others too. judithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04070661448170951709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882959808811184859.post-82195519493885548452017-03-22T20:05:48.717-05:002017-03-22T20:05:48.717-05:00They are banned in California too and a smattering...They are banned in California too and a smattering of cities around the US too. But yes, it is a hassle that they can't be put in the regular recycling bin. I'll admit I'm the worst about returning them to the store. They disappear so apparently Hubby is better about it. Since carrying a reusable bag the amount I have to deal with has gone way down.SkipTheBaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02426786864856395559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882959808811184859.post-71421011809829302772017-03-21T13:47:54.921-05:002017-03-21T13:47:54.921-05:00Wow I had no idea plastic bags werr banned in Hawa...Wow I had no idea plastic bags werr banned in Hawaii . What bothers me the most is that you can't just put them in the recycling bin. Some stores will take them back but some don't and the local dump my husband and I go too will not let you recycle them bc they clog the machines. That's in CT. The law is the same in VT as well bc it clogs up the machines. I wish they would make it easier to recycle them or ban them like Hawaii!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11104519674149142347noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5882959808811184859.post-3278251552963211792017-03-20T21:51:15.797-05:002017-03-20T21:51:15.797-05:00Yes we are! When I was in high school in the 70's, I belonged to the Ecology Club. That was way before recycling hit its stride. I just try to improve on my conservation each year, and work toward less impact on Mother Earth every day. So glad to have found you and your blog. We are kindred spirits.daisy ghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06129079277073067462noreply@blogger.com
