SkipTheBag Month: March

Are you tired of dealing with a mountain of plastic bags after your grocery shop? Do you feel guilty about the fact that the plastic bag you just used for 10 minutes will never degrade and could harm wildlife? Do you want to switch to reusable bags, but feel like you are the only person doing it?

Well you are in luck. March 2017 has been declared #SkipTheBag Month! For this month the goal is to refuse all single use plastic bags. No more bags at the grocery store, farmer's market, clothing store, hardware store, home store, restaurant take out, or anywhere else where plastic bags are lurking.

Together we will help make an environmental impact on reducing plastic consumption and by sharing on social media we will encourage others to make the change too.

They say it takes 21 days to change a habit, so by the end of March we should have ended our plastic bag consumption for good!

How to participate in #SkipTheBag Month?

  1. Sign up for emails. I will be sending out articles and tips once a week during the month to help motivate and encourage you.
  2. Follow @SkipTheBag on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook
  3. Skip the bag! When you are out don’t accept plastic bag. Use a reusable bag, paper bag, pillowcase or just hand carry the items. How you transport the items is less important than refusing the plastic bag.
  4. Spread the word. Share your achievements and challenges using the hashtag #SkipTheBag.
  5. Feel great knowing you did something good for the environment and entered to win some great products.

  1. We already use reusable bags, but I will send this to those I know who could use a bit of a nudge. Thank you for all you do!

  2. This is a cause so close to my heart. I have used fabric bags for many years and have had some gorgeous pink polka dots ones made. I keep four of them folded up in my handbag so I am never at the shops without them.

    1. I've found I use them far more when I carry them in my purse. I can't count the number of times I had just left them in the car! Your pink polka dots sound fun!

  3. I try to use reusable bags as much as possible, but my husband does the grocery shopping and he forgots so when he brings plastic bags home we do reuse them or send them to the recycle center for plastic. I try to keep 1 or 2 in our car to use. Thanks for sharing all your tips and great information and for doing the blog hop every week. Have a healthy, happy and blessed week.

    1. Yes, I transitioned before Hubby did...and there are even times when I slip up! It makes my heart happy when we are out shopping and say, "we don't need a bag" in unison.

  4. I've used reusable bags for at least 20 years, before they were fashionable. Do you know the versatile Japanese "furoshiki"? They've used this reusable, versatile square cloth to carry goods for centuries. It's elegant and GORGEOUS!

  5. Living in France means that plastic bags are not handed out as freely as in other countries. Supermarkets stopped providing them years ago, except ironically for clothes, yet clothes shops often just hand you your clothes for you to carry out naked (the clothes, not you!). Annoyingly, at my local organic store the small paper bags used to fill with free flow items now have a plastic see though strip on them so I now either use a bigger bag or take my own re-useable one. Let's hope they don't switch the bigger bags any time soon. Looking forward to making March (and all my life) a #SkipTheBag Month.

Thanks you for adding this post to my #GoingGreenLinky and I hope it helps people realise that they do not need those plastic bags.
